What is a slip ring?

A slip ring is a device which allows the transfer of electrical power and signal or data to be transferred across a rotating interface. It is most often used in order to eliminate the need for cable wraps which have limited rotational distance and limited cable lifetime.  BGB Technology manufactures custom slip rings for products including wind turbines, construction, cranes, packaging and more.

What is the structure of a slip ring?

A slip ring is comprised of two major components, a rotor and a stator.  The rotor is the component which rotates and the stator is the component which is mounted in a fixed position.  In most cases, the rotor contains the slip rings (the part of the assembly on to which the brushes make contact), and the stator is comprised of the brush assembly or brush block which contains the contacting brushes.

What types or configurations of slip rings are available?

Slip rings are available in a variety of configurations.  The one most used is the “drum” or “barrel type”, and also a “platter” or “pancake” type are also available and used when there is a height restriction within the application.  Slip rings can also, dependent upon the application, be supplied as “hybrid” assemblies which means that other components can be added to the assembly such as pneumatic and hydraulic media joints and fiber optic rotary joints (FORJ).  BGB Technology can custom manufacturer many types of slip ring configurations.  Contact us for more information.

What information is needed in order for BGB to supply the correct slip ring?

It is important we understand and receive the following information along with your slip ring inquiry:

  • Operating rotational speed
  • The number and type (power and signal) of circuits required
  • The current rating of each of the circuits required within the slip ring
  • If signal circuits are required, we must understand what types of signals or data will be
    transferred across the slip ring
  • The operating temperature range of the slip ring
  • The environmental conditions the slip ring will operate or the IP class of sealing required if known
  • The type and length of the exit wiring, or connectors required

What types of signals can be transferred across the slip rings?

BGB can supply slip ring designs which can transmit low and middle level frequency signals such as: Inter Bus, Profibus, RS422, RS485, PLC control signals, digital and analog video, digital audio, Ethernet, and sensor signals.

Are BGB slip rings capable of transferring high speed and large volume data?

Yes!  BGB slip rings can be supplied along with a fiber optic rotary joint to give it this capability.  Please contact us discuss your high volume data requirements with BGB in order for us to determine the best solution for your application.

What types of brush systems are supplied with the BGB slip rings?

BGB can supply slip rings with a number of brush contact systems, ranging from carbon and metallic graphite brushes, fiber brush systems and wire systems in gold or silver.

What capacities of carbon and metallic graphite brush holder systems can BGB supply?

BGB, and along with our partner Mack, can supply the brush holder and brush combination to meet your requirements, from low level amp to over 500A capacities. We also have the capability to work with you to develop a brush holder system to meet any high volume requirements as well as, holder systems for linear electrification applications.

Does BGB supply the carbon or metallic graphite brushes with the brush holders?

Yes we do! We will need to understand the application for the brush holder, the rotational speed and the slip ring diameter on to which the holder will be operating to insure the correct brush selection.

Can BGB refurbish or repair my slip ring?

We will be happy to discuss your repair or refurbishment opportunity with you.  In most cases, it is difficult to repair or refurbish a slip ring, but in some cases an opportunity may exist.  We will most likely request that you send us photos of the damaged slip ring so that we can make an initial assessment to give you a response.  Please send your inquiry.
