A slip ring is an electro-mechanical device or piece of equipment that works within machinery and transfers power and data from a stationary part to a rotating part. Slip rings also transfer video, analog and digital signals.

Depending upon the machinery into which they’re going, slip rings may need to be part of large pieces of equipment, such as when they’re placed into wind turbines or a large radar array. Or they may be part of small, compact devices when placed inside a surveillance camera.

In knowing that slip rings are necessary for some pieces of equipment to work properly, the question arises: How much do they cost, and what variables affect the cost of a slip ring?

What Variables Affect The Cost of a Slip Ring?

The general answer to this question is that some of the cost hinges upon the size and type of slip ring. What materials make up the slip ring also plays a role.


Slip rings can vary wildly in their costs depending on the size of the ring. In general, smaller slip rings cost less than larger ones especially when the larger ones are bigger, heavier and denser than the small ones and will be used in a large piece of heavy equipment. However, some small, technologically innovative slip rings are costly as well.

Technological Sophistication

Slip rings that are placed inside sophisticated electronic systems and/or based on technological advances will cost more. This is because you’re paying for the burgeoning technology that is within the device itself. You’ll see this with slip rings that are used inside internet and Ethernet systems. Another type of slip ring that may be more costly is the contactless slip ring because of its cutting-edge technology.

Materials Used for Construction

The materials that comprise the slip ring will affect its cost. Some materials are more costly than others. A slip ring with copper may cost more than one without simply because copper is costly as a metal. Slip rings that utilize fiber optics tend to cost more than your basic slip ring, too.

Materials for Certain Environments and Functionality

For instance, slip rings that can stand up to ocean water and not degrade or oxidize over decades must be made of materials that will cost more than your basic stainless steel.

Slip rings that go on airplanes or in a space station must withstand forces and conditions that aren’t found on the earth and, thus, must be made of materials that can handle it. Such functionality will cost more.


While this certainly isn’t always the case, some slip ring manufacturers offer quantity discounts. So, the more slip rings you buy at one time, the cheaper each slip ring will cost.


When a slip ring is made to order it’s hard to get an actual quote for the price until one example has been made. However, being custom-made almost ensures that the slip ring will cost more than one that is mass produced.

Approximate Costs of Slip Rings

Some prices are given here so that you can get a ballpark idea of what certain slip rings cost, but the costs outline here do not coincide with costs related to the slip rings sold at BGB. It’s important to note that slip rings vary greatly in their function, uses, and manufacturing process.

Here’s a very rough guide for pricing slip rings: They can range from less than $1.00 for small electrical devices and up to $50,000 or more for large mechanical parts. Following are different types of slip rings and approximate averages as to how much they cost.

  • The cheapest slip rings tend to be small electrical devices called capsule slip rings. They start at $0.50 and can run up to $20.
  • Flange-type electrical hydraulic rotary joint slip rings run from $20 to $1,000.
  • A small wind generator slip ring on Amazon costs $14.99.
  • A bore industrial, through-hole electrical slip ring costs $50 to $2,500 per piece for a spring cable reel in rotary machinery.
  • A slip ring for an ABB motor is made to run inside a wind turbine. They are made of stainless steel and copper and typically cost $3,000-$5,000 per unit.
  • A wind power generator slip ring for an ABB motor costs $3,000 to $5,000 per unit. This type of slip ring is used in wind turbines and is made of stainless steel and copper.
